A634.9.4.RB - A Reflection of Our Learning
A634.9.4.RB - A Reflection of Our Learning
Over the last nine weeks,
this course has covered a lot of material about ethics and moral responsibility.
The three points that have stood out the most are moral responsibility, ethical
behavior, and the variation of how people judge their decision to appease moral
standards. Each of these topics has encouraged thinking through this course in
addition to engaging in discussions with fellow classmates and understanding
different perspectives.
The understanding of one’s
moral responsibility is important in all aspects of life. It is not feasible to
ignore what is in front of us and pretend it does not exist. This pertains to
our social life, when someone is struggling or in need of food, help them. At
work, if we see a co-worker not adapting well or going through a hardship, be
an ear to listen or moral support to get them through the day or week. At
church, when we know someone needs prayer, do not ask them just do it. These
are the basics of moral responsibility in life to be kind to others and treat
them with compassion just as we would want to be treated.
Ethical behavior is
another topic that stood out over the course of the nine weeks. Recently, in
the news, it was reported there was a man drowning and teenagers stood on the
shore, laughed and filmed the man. Where is the ethical standard to call for
help and do what was necessary to save his life. There was none! This is why
the topic is important because we all have a responsibility to do what is right
and ethical, regardless of if we want. This should and needs to be taught in
order for people to grasp the importance of ethical behavior.
Finally, the way in which
people judge their decisions to appease moral expectations is another topic
that stood out. We do not all make the same decisions for the same reasons,
often; decisions are made because society says one should do something. In week
eight, we had to write about two leaders, one who was successful and one who
failed. After writing about them and reviewing their actions, which brought
them to the status they were, it was interesting to see the reasoning that each
used to make their decisions. One made decisions in the best interest of
everyone and to support those who voted him in office, by living up to his word
to the best of his ability. The other continues to make decisions in the best
interest of his self, regardless of the detrimental impact it has on the
citizens of his country. Each leader has made decisions based on what they
believe is right and moral in their eyes, but their decisions did not come
without consequences.
The overall value of this
course was important because it provided a chance for me to look at myself, and
how I make decisions in order to see where I need improvement and where I can
take a step back. Moving forward, I have a choice to continue down the current
path I am on or I can made steps to improve myself daily and check my moral
compass to make sure my values, ethics, and morals align.
