A640.4.4.RB - Developing a Case
(Post event analysis)
·
Did the assignment help you in your
understanding and analysis of cases?
·
In light of this exercise, what are
some of the issues that are pertinent to case study development?
·
What did you learn through
completing this assignment?
This was the first time writing a case analysis from a
different perspective, usually as the student I am analyzing case study and
writing based on the information provided. Since I was required to write the
case study, it proved more challenging and difficult than I expected because I
had to sort through life events and put together a case study based on experience.
However, a new challenging experience as a student is a great way to learn and
expand my writing, thinking, and analyzing abilities to move away from my
comfort zone. Did the assignment help my understanding and analysis of cases?
Yes and no. Yes, I learned more about case analysis or I would like to believe
I have a better understanding but no because all case studies vary, and the writing
is open to interpretation. Through the MSLD program we have reviewed case
studies in all the classes and each one is written differently, and the
questions vary, this leaves a lot of room for the reader to interpret the data
based on their own understanding.
What are some of the issues that are pertinent to case study
development? One of the major issues for case studies is the information is
subject to the writer’s interpretation of the situation. The writer can remove,
insert, change, or interpret the situation based on how they remember the
outcome. This means the information can be manipulated to fit the writer’s needs.
Does this mean it will happen every time? No! But, it does mean it is a possibility
the case may not be 100% accurate and the case is subject to the writer remembering
the chain of the events.
Through this assignment I further understand that
all writing is up to the author of the story and the interpretation of events
will depend on the memory of the writer. What this means is that when reading
case studies the reader should look at them objectively because the writer only
provides details they want the reader to see, the writer controls the details.
To support this understanding about case studies, McLeod
(2008) explained that there is a lot of scope for observer bias and it could be
that the subjective opinions of the psychologist intruded in the assessment of
what the data means because it is based on the qualitative data and the
interpretation of the psychologist. Andreas (2003) further supported this
understanding when she explained that there is no single coherent set of
validity and reliability tests for each research phase in case study research available.
In conclusion,
the case study exercise this week was a great learning experience as a writer
and the assignment was a great tool to expand my writing as a student. Through
further research about case studies, I learned they are more in depth and
usually involve a psychologist for interpretation and review. Although mine was
based on a simple experience, I learned they are more involved and detailed but
the overall experience was an important learning tool.
